General Information

The Chanticleer is JSU's student-run weekly newspaper. Five thousand copies are distributed free to nearly 9,000 students and over 700 faculty and staff members around the main campus. The paper is produced by a staff of 10 students.

The Chanticleer is an Old English word for "rooster," and is another name for Jacksonville State University's mascot, the Gamecock. The newspaper began publication in 1934 as The Teacola, soon afterward changing its name to The Collegian. The Chanticleer changed to its current name and tabloid-sized format in 1967.

Jacksonville State University is located in Jacksonville, Alabama (pop. 10,000) near the slightly larger city of Anniston, just off Interstate 20. The school is about 1 1/2 hours from Atlanta, and just an hour from Birmingham.

JSU was founded in 1883 as a teacher-training college, and has grown into the educational center of northeast Alabama. JSU trains more teachers than any other four-year institution in the state.
